The guys at DV visited a Sony Style store where the team were showing off a Sony Bravia 52LX900 – a LED backlight 3D TV! It’s a 3D compatible television, for one thing. Apart from that, it uses Edge LED backlighting and has the Motionflow 200 Hz Pro system. We still don’t know how much it’s going to cost because it won’t actually go on sale until the summer. The demo that we saw wasn’t a production model, axnd the software inside could well change before the LX900 reaches the shops.

The first thing we noticed is that the LX900 was connected to a PS3, which confirms that the console will receive a firmware update to make it compatible with 3D, and good progress has already been made. So Sony could use a PS3 to show us a series of 3D clips including documentaries, extracts from films, football matches and even some game that will be adapted for 3D.

Sony‘s previous TV, the KDL-46W3000, was a serious disappointment, with pictures largely ruined by overt smearing and motion blur. So we can’t say we’re expecting very much from the new 40in Sony KDL-40W4000. Terrific is the 40W4000‘s black level response. Sony has been making stead improvements in this department with every successive LCD generation, but it’s really leapt forward here to the point where dark scenes genuinely look as credible and as rich as they do on many plasma offerings. Colours, meanwhile, enjoy consistent tones without sacrificing the vibrancy that’s long been a Sony LCD trademark. What’s more, the new Bravia Engine 2 processing helps colours achieve seemingly immaculate blends, with no striping or patchiness.There’s also practically no video noise aside from a very occasional shimmer over some patches of fine detail, and this applies to standard as well as high definition.In fact, with the set’s sound also outperforming many of Sony’s previous flat TV models, it’s really hard to find much fault with the 40W4000 at all. Read this and dozen of other expert and user reviews @ Testfreaks.

Some people don’t think it’s worth it to replace a perfectly good DVD with a Blu-ray disc, while others feel it’s like enjoying the movie for the first time all over again. Either way, Disney hopes that the biggest title this week, The Chronicles of Narnia, will get you primed up for the sequel due out in theaters this Summer.

Total Blu-ray titles: 532

Blu-ray

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Fox)

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe (Disney)

* Blu-ray total does not reflect 32 Paramount titles that were previously officially available.

Again this week the biggest news is the lack of a Blu-ray release, but this time from a studio that hasn’t announced it’d go Blu. That’s right, the once Red exclusive Weinstein, has been MIA in the HD movie business for a long time and no word when that might change. But I’m Not There isn’t the biggest loss Blu has seen recently, and there are a few titles to get excited about. The big day-and-date title this week is from Warner with P.S. I Love You, which is the same studio that has the biggest catalog title with Twister.

With the latest releases the Blu-ray family counts 525 members, which we hope will grow more rapidly in months to come… And now, the list:

The biggest one is easily Cloverfield, which is obviously MIA because Paramount has yet to release any Blu-ray movies since going Red exclusive.

We have two sub-par horror flicks with One Missed Call having an unbelievably low IMDB score of 2.8 out of 10 and Sublime is pretty pitiful itself at 5.2. Your best bet this week is the Global Warming documentary from National Geographic, which looks interesting but is no Planet Earth.

We are only hoping that the next week will be more exciting…

The list for Blu-ray movies now include 508 titles, a the newest are as follow:

Blu-ray

* National Geographic: Six Degrees Could Change the World (National Geographic)
* One Missed Call (Warner)
* The Orphanage (New Line)
* Sublime (Warner)

Sony hinted that the update would be coming during January’s Consumer Electronics Show, but today’s announcement confirms that it will arrive before the end of March.

If it goes according to plan, the update would make the PS3 the first Blu-ray player to offer Profile 2.0 (or BD-Live, as it’s also known). Profile 2.0 will add online features to compatible Blu-ray discs, the first two of which–The Sixth Day and Walk Hard–are scheduled to hit store shelves in April. Its addition to the spec finally brings Blu-ray’s feature set in line with HD DVD players, all of which were built from the start to be able to access online content (though, to be fair, the feature wasn’t widely employed on many HD DVD movies).

The only other 2.0 players that have been announced are the Panasonic DMP-BD50 (due in April) and the Sony BDP-S550 (coming this autumn), both of which are expected to cost at least $100 more than the entry-level PS3.

Now that the format war with HD DVD is over, should hi-def television owners rush out and buy Blu-ray players? Maybe.

If you’re looking for a good price, this could be the time to jump in. “The prices of Blu-ray players were forced down by the war with HD DVD,” said Richard Doherty, research director of Envisioneering Group. That price, which headed downward during the holiday buying season, is now about $400 for a mainstream Blu-ray player. “Don’t be surprised if they start to go up this summer,” Doherty said.

Manufacturers of the players, such as Sony Corp. and Panasonic, will justify the higher prices with added features, he said. Basic models might become hard to find.

“I would not rule out Sony coming out with a model that has network video,” Doherty said. “You could take your vacation videos and send them right to someone’s HDTV.” Another possible enhancement — a jukebox-type player that could be loaded with multiple Blu-ray discs. By the end of the year, upgraded Blu-ray 2.0 players are expected to hit stores with online connectivity as a standard feature.If you don’t care about having the latest and greatest, this might be the time to buy.

Still, no matter what enhancements come along, prices on consumer electronic goods always seem to head down eventually.Take, for example, DVD players that sold for $1,000 and more when introduced in the United States in 1997. Now they’re commonly available for less than $50.But Doherty thinks prices for Blu-ray machines will not plunge quickly.“This is a really advanced laser system.”

It seems that everyone either has or wants to get the latest Flat Screen TV for their home. What sort of Flat Screen TV do you purchase?

OK are you going to go with a Plasma TV (older technology, been around since 1964) or do you go with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for the Flat Screen TV?

So what exactly is Digital TV and what these things called Flat Screen TVs? Here quite often we see the terms TFT, LCD and Plasma being bandied around as if they are the same yet though they may be similar technologies LCD and Plasma Screens are very different in practicality.

In a nutshell Flat Screen TVs can either be Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) sets or can be Plasma screen but the two are different. One of the major differences between the two technologies probably lies in the fact that with LCD TVs because the main technology used is TFT (Thin Film Transistor) by and large the screens are able to be much more energy efficient and potentially much smaller and more mobile.

So lets get down to basics and start looking at individual TVs.

The first LCD TV that we recommend that you take a look at here is the Sony KDL-32V20000

The KDL-32V20000 is a 32in LCD TV and the prices for these are around 1300 pounds sterling or 2600 US dollars. The resolution of the screen is 1366 X 768 and with regards to being HD ready the answer is yes. The Sony has 2 (2 RGB) scarts and and the type and number of multimedia interfaces the the Sony KDL-32V20000 uses are HDMI and 1. The type of tuner for this TV is Analogue and Digital and the KDL-32V20000 is available from a wide variety of outlets.

So given this information, what would be our view of the KDL-32V20000?

Well to start with our score for the picture quality is 10 out of 10 and closely tied in to the picture quality is the sound quality and our score for this would be 10 out of 10 Connectivity is important for most of these new media TV Sets and such our score would be 8 out of 10 If we take a look at the overall “featureability” our score would be 10 out of 10 and with regards to ease of use and overall value for money our opinion and score would be 8 and 8 out of 10 respectively.

Taking verything into consideration our overall view of the package would be this TV is very bit as elegant as the rest of the TV’s from Sony and has a performance to match. The visuals are a joy to behold with good performances across the board. The audio is pretty damn good also and the speaker system give a performance that is almost unrivalled. OK the price is slightly more than contemporary units from other manufacturers but in this case we feel that this would be money well spent – always assuming that you had access to the funds in the first place.

The next LCD TV that we recommend that you take a look at here is the Samsung LE-32R87BD

The LE-32R87BD is a 32in LCD TV and currently these TV’s can be found for 700 pounds sterling or 1400 US dollars. The resolution of the screen is 1366 X 768 and with regards to being HD ready the answer is yes. The Samsung has 2 (1 RGB) scarts and and the type and number of multimedia interfaces the the Samsung LE-32R87BD uses are HDMI and 3. The type of tuner for this TV is Analogue and Digital and the LE-32R87BD is available from a wide variety of outlets.

So to take an initial view how would we rate LE-32R87BD?

The most obvious place to start with as far as TV’s are concerned would be the picture quality and our score here would be 10 out of 10 next we would look at the sound quality and our view of this would be 6 out of 10 Taking a look at the number of relevant connections and their availability, our score would be 10 out of 10 Overall with regards to the actual “featureability” of the set our score would be 10 out of 10 and the final individual verdicts would relate to the ease of use and overall value for money and our scores here would be 8 and 10 out of 10 respectively.

The overall verdict would be that this TV is great value all round. The design and performance marks it as yet another great TV from Samsung.

Remember that all the prices we use in these reviews are very much designed for illustration purposes only and in some cases you may well find the actual price cheaper but also in some cases, more expensive.

Sony has been leap years ahead with its technology in television sets, and recently HDTV TV. Since 1946 Sony has been committed to bringing the world the best in consumer electronics. Having made major leaps in consumer technology, we now have access to the Sony Bravia High Definition TV set range, the cutting edge in HDTV technology.

Although these Sony LCD High Definition TVs were initially somewhat high-priced, they are somewhat more reasonable now. The Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 is a 40-inch model that retails for close to $2200. Regardless, they do provide some of the best pictures that you can get on a LCD TV. Although LCD High Definition TVs may not quite be able to compete with plasma HDTV TV, Sony has certainly done a nice job with the rebranded Bravia line. At a major HDTV TV review site, the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 HDTV TV got a rating of 7.7 from the editors on a ten-point scale. The Sony Bravia High Definition TV set KDL-V40XBR1 also had an average user rating of 8.4 (from 87 users).
