Despite the modest size—it measures just 180 x 180 x 30.5 mm—it can play both 2D and 3D Blu-ray discs, automatically converting the former to three dimensions on the fly, and offers the same features as much bigger models. A built-in media player can access most common video formats (including JPEG, MP3, AVI, DivX HD or MKV) if you connect an external device formatted using NTFS. Support for BD-Live comes via 1 GB of internal memory, and the BD-D7000 has many of the same Internet services as Samsung’s latest TVs. It supports the DLNA standard to access content from elsewhere on your home network. Tiny player is expected this month for still unknown price.

LG showed a lot of new products at this year’s CES in Las Vegas, with the most interesting segment being in passive 3D technology. In 2010, all worldwide available TV sets were using active 3D technology, both for LCD and plasma screens.

The decision for this is clear: active 3D technology is far superior to the passive one because of the output resolution, as opposed to the passive solutions that offer only half of it. With passive 3D technology, LG will offer less expensive, lightweight polarized glasses that are more comfortable to use and do not requre batteries. This will reduce the price of the overall home 3D solution and also enable larger families to enjoy 3D without the need to dig down in their pockets (too deep concerning price/performance ratio of the current 3DTVs, especially those based on inferior LCD TV technology).

New Cinema 3D screens with passive 3D technology are as follows:

INFINIA LW6500 Series: Cinema 3D (passive 3D); LED Plus technology with local dimming; TruMotion 240Hz; 2D-to-3D conversion; SmartTV with Magic Remote; WiFi capability (adapter included); four pairs of glasses. Screen sizes of 47, 55, and 65 inches.

INFINIA LW5600 Series: Cinema 3D (passive 3D); LED Plus technology with local dimming; TruMotion 120Hz; 2D-to-3D conversion; SmartTV with Magic Remote; WiFi capability (adapter included); four pairs of glasses. Screen sizes of 47 and 55 inches.

There are new Blu-ray players with 3D support, which is necessary companion with 3DTV. The models are:

BD690: 3D playback; SmartTV; 250GB hard drive; integrated WiFi; DLNA (server and client).

BD670: 3D playback; SmartTV; integrated WiFi; DLNA.

BD650: 3D playback; SmartTV; WiFi capability (adapter sold separately); DLNA.

We are looking forward to testing new LG LED TVs and will get back to you as soon as we have the first results. Still, no sign of 32 Paramount titles that were previously available… Ah, Paramount why do you tease us? Just when we thought we were finally going to get rid of that annoying asterisks once and for all, you seemly move back all the re-issues to June 3rd, and to make it worse, the most highly anticipated Paramount titles like Bee Movie, There Will Be Blood and Cloverfield are delayed as well — honestly we’re not sure who’s right at this point, but we’re going to error on the side of caution on this one.

But that doesn’t meant it isn’t a great week, as there are a number of titles to get excited about this week including what is easily the biggest in National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.

Some people don’t think it’s worth it to replace a perfectly good DVD with a Blu-ray disc, while others feel it’s like enjoying the movie for the first time all over again. Either way, Disney hopes that the biggest title this week, The Chronicles of Narnia, will get you primed up for the sequel due out in theaters this Summer.

Total Blu-ray titles: 532

Blu-ray

Again this week the biggest news is the lack of a Blu-ray release, but this time from a studio that hasn’t announced it’d go Blu. That’s right, the once Red exclusive Weinstein, has been MIA in the HD movie business for a long time and no word when that might change. But I’m Not There isn’t the biggest loss Blu has seen recently, and there are a few titles to get excited about. The big day-and-date title this week is from Warner with P.S. I Love You, which is the same studio that has the biggest catalog title with Twister.

With the latest releases the Blu-ray family counts 525 members, which we hope will grow more rapidly in months to come… And now, the list:

The biggest one is easily Cloverfield, which is obviously MIA because Paramount has yet to release any Blu-ray movies since going Red exclusive.

We have two sub-par horror flicks with One Missed Call having an unbelievably low IMDB score of 2.8 out of 10 and Sublime is pretty pitiful itself at 5.2. Your best bet this week is the Global Warming documentary from National Geographic, which looks interesting but is no Planet Earth.

We are only hoping that the next week will be more exciting…

The list for Blu-ray movies now include 508 titles, a the newest are as follow:

Blu-ray

* National Geographic: Six Degrees Could Change the World (National Geographic)
* One Missed Call (Warner)
* The Orphanage (New Line)
* Sublime (Warner)

However, this week the red ones don’t have their new members, so the whole list is blue.

Blu-ray test disc will help enthusiasts and HDTV owners get the best possible picture with tools available on this disc, which is always good. We have to admit that we don’t know what the difference between this long over due version, and the one previously available on HD DVD, though.

In the lines below you can view the full list. Total number for Blu-ray is now 478, which does not reflect 20 Paramount titles that were previously available.

Is it time to go Blu? Now that the format war with HD DVD is over, should hi-def television owners rush out and buy Blu-ray players? Maybe.

If you’re looking for a good price, this could be the time to jump in. “The prices of Blu-ray players were forced down by the war with HD DVD,” said Richard Doherty, research director of Envisioneering Group. That price, which headed downward during the holiday buying season, is now about $400 for a mainstream Blu-ray player. “Don’t be surprised if they start to go up this summer,” Doherty said.

Manufacturers of the players, such as Sony Corp. and Panasonic, will justify the higher prices with added features, he said. Basic models might become hard to find.

“I would not rule out Sony coming out with a model that has network video,” Doherty said. “You could take your vacation videos and send them right to someone’s HDTV.” Another possible enhancement — a jukebox-type player that could be loaded with multiple Blu-ray discs. By the end of the year, upgraded Blu-ray 2.0 players are expected to hit stores with online connectivity as a standard feature.If you don’t care about having the latest and greatest, this might be the time to buy.

Still, no matter what enhancements come along, prices on consumer electronic goods always seem to head down eventually.Take, for example, DVD players that sold for $1,000 and more when introduced in the United States in 1997. Now they’re commonly available for less than $50.But Doherty thinks prices for Blu-ray machines will not plunge quickly.“This is a really advanced laser system.”
