Not quite sure if NEC‘s three latest will ever be revealed outside of Australia, but we’ll take a look if for no other reason than to appease those in Perth, Sydney and Darwin. Starting things off is the PXT-50FHDP1, a 50-inch 1080p plasma that packs a 100Hz refresh rate, a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, multiple HDMI inputs, a built-in EPG and an integrated TV tuner. As for the other guys, we’ve got the 42-inch PXT42XD3 and 50-inch PXT50XD3, both of which arrive with their own HD tuner, three HDMI ports, a 30,000:1 contrast ratio, RS-232 control ports and a 1,024 x 768 / 1,365 x 768 resolution, respectively.

The Samsung FP-T5084 offers pleasing colours and sharp picture detail in a sleekly designed cabinet. Moreover, this 50in plasma HDTV has an affordable price.

Colours in high-definition scenes were luxuriously rich. An HD scene revealed bright, natural colours and realistic skin tones. Jurors watching ‘Corpse Bride’, a colourfully macabre animated film, gave the Samsung FP-T5084 a high score for the vivid tones and detail that it reproduced. Standard-definition quality was slightly above average; a standard-definition baseball game had well-saturated oranges and turf greens, with fine detail in dark areas and minimal pixelation.

The Samsung FP-T5084 offers a slew of adjustable settings, including RGB gain and offset controls in the White Balance section of the OSD menu (for fine colour temperature controls), and separate pink, green, blue, and white settings in My Colour Control.

The guys at PC Advisor tested Mitsubishi’s new 52-inch fullHD, 16:9, 120 Hz screen and came to conclusion that despite it’s beautiful design, this TV has below par performance.

The specs of this screen are as follows:

52in Widescreen TFT active matrix;
1920 x 1080 resolution;
1080p (FullHD) display format;
16:9 image aspect ratio;
120Hz; progressive scanning (line doubling);
4D digital;
Color Temperature Control;
DeepField, SharpEdge, X.v.Color, Deep Color, PerfecTint, Plush1080p, PerfectColor, Full Spectrum Color, Tru1080p Processing, NetCommand Home Network Control System;
DVR1x;
analog/digital combo tuner;
HDMI, S-Video, Component, Composite; HDCP Compatible;
Dimensions: 1,219 x 145 x 772 mm;
Weight: 34kg

If one would judge TV just by it’s specs, it would be very hard to find any flaw: fullHD resolution, big, 52-inch screenm 120 Hz progressive scanning and a whole bunch of various technologies for perfecting image and enhancing sound. But, the review at PC Advisor showed many faults and oversaturated colours was the most easier to see. “Watching both high-definition and standard-definition shows on the Mitsubishi LT-52244, jurors saw images with lurid tones and some background pixelation. High-definition movies such as ‘Corpse Bride’ and ‘Mission Impossible III’ exhibited garish colours. You also get shimmery wood grain and fabric, and orange skin tones.”

Second minus goes to the OSD that despite many adjustments that offers has one problem: each time you change any setting, the menu goes right back to the top one, so you have to step through the whole OSD again to get to the next setting.
The remote is fully backlit when you press any of it’s buttons which is a definite plus.

The speaker’s are below the expected quality of this class – it’s lack of fullnes and narrow range isn’t something one would expect after unloading rather big amount of money in the store. “Background audio and orchestral music for ‘Phantom of the Opera’ sounded shrill.”

“The built-in USB port works well for displaying photos, but the Mitsubishi LT-52244 loaded pictures slowly. The TV automatically switched to photo display mode when we connected a flash-card reader, and it allowed us to view a slideshow of our pictures from a memory card.”

Information overload does not help a buyer as well. We are inundated with so much technical details and jargon. Such statistics only serve to confuse than to discern.

What we have done here is to cut the chase by reviewing what reviewers have already reviewed. I think as lay people, we do not need to know the basic technical mumbo-jumbo. We just need to know what is the best in the eyes of the reviewers. We shall try to tone down on the technical stuff and tell you in a straight lay-person’s language.

Hence, we give you a summary of the best 42″ HDTV that is recommended by prominent reviewers. After much of our own research and reviewing, we have narrowed to one 42″ HDTV:

Reasons For Buying the Panasonic TH-42PZ700U 1. Top picture clarity and quality, especially its deep black levels and realistic shadow detail along with a clean image. In short, it wins hands down for picture quality!!!. This is without going into technical picture comparisons etc…but just human visual appreciation of the picture quality;

2. Top rating by some key top reviewers (I dont think they can be so wrong);

3. 81% of Amazon.com’s customers who viewed this product bought it!;

Panasonic TH-42PZ700U

Enough said. You have to trust us to find out for you what the reviewers have summarised as their choice recommendation for a 42″ HDTV!

Unfortunately, we’re not privy to actual specifications just yet, but we are told to expect a “high contrast ratio” to go along with the automatic brightness and color optimizing technologies. We’ve also got a sneaking suspicion that this beauty won’t be one of the sets ringing up for next to nothing on Black Friday, but we certainly hope LG fleshes out a…

That’s by order of the Federal Communications Commission. As a result, many people are rushing to buy HDTVs, especially during this holiday season.

Unfortunately for consumers, there are a lot of TV options out there. There are LCDs, DLPs, plasmas, flat-screens, projection screens, large sets, small sets – and all in high-definition. With so many choices and more being added every day, even the most educated in high-definition technology can find their heads swimming.

Local TV expert and owner of Bond’s Television and Electronics, Bob Bond, offers up some information to keep us afloat.

“The old format is four units horizontal by three units vertical. The new technology is 16 units by nine units,” Bond said.

That means if you want the same size image as your old 32-inch screen, you’d have to buy a 40-inch HDTV. Good rule of thumb: The diagonal dimensions of an HD set should be 25-percent larger than your current analog TV.

But aspect ratio isn’t the only thing to consider. How the picture is transmitted to the screen is another. You’ll need to choose between 1080i, interlace scanning, and 720p or 1080p, progressive scanning.

“1080p is the highest quality unit. It’s unlikely that that will be broadcast soon. The only thing that has 1080p is like your Blue Ray or High-Definition DVD’s,” Bond said.

Even cabling is different. You can use standard analog cables, but they won’t give you true digital quality. A single cable called an HDMI will do a straight digital transfer from your DVD player or cable box to the set. Although HDMI are transferring audio and video digitally, it is still advised not to buy the cheapest ones on the market.
A word of advice: dont feel pressured to buy. Just get the manufacturer’s name and the model number of the set and check it out on the manufacturer’s Web site. There’s probably even a glossary with definitions to all the HDTV terms.

Don’t worry about getting an image if you choose not to buy an HDTV. If you have cable TV, your cable company will convert local digital TV stations for both analog and digital customers. You just won’t have that digital quality. If you get your programming the old-fashioned way–through rabbit ears–the government has a coupon program that allows you to get a converter for about $40.
